By Language: When registering to vote, citizens have the option to select a preferred language other than English in which to receive voting materials. English is automatically selected as a voter’s language choice if no alternative is selected. While the vast the majority (95%) of registered voters in California have English as their designated language in the official voter file, the remaining five percent have selected an alternative language when receiving voter materials. We note here that a voter may want and/or need language assistance even if they did not select a language preference for their ballot materials. A voter may not be aware that the option to select a preferred language for their voting materials is available from their elections office or there could be other reasons for why a voter does not designate a preferred language.
